You and God’s Love

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39)

20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. (Romans 3:20)

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

19 We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4;19)

What is it about so many of us that we cannot simply accept a gift with grace? Even when we know it’s not right, so often we default to a “works mentality.” We try to earn God’s favor. We try to earn our salvation. We try to earn God’s love. But there are two critical things we must understand about that love: First, you can’t be separated from it, and second, you can’t earn it.

This side of the final judgement, when those who have decidedly rejected God’s offer of salvation in Jesus Christ have their desire to be separate from God ultimately realized (the second death of Revelation 20:11-15), there is not a man, woman or child that can be separated from the love of God. It’s not possible. God even loves those who have yet to surrender to him (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). And for those who have surrendered, we can stand steadfast in the knowledge that not even Satan himself can steal us from God’s love!

We love because he first loved us. We can’t be separated from that love. And we can’t earn that love — it’s simply who God is. For today, take some time to ponder how incredible is the inescapable love of God for you. What is the Holy Spirit whispering to you right now?
