Misconceptions: If I could only ______, then God would love me more.
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:14-19)
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him… (Psalm 103:11)
Human love is so fickle. Human love is tainted with conditions. Human love is imperfect. So when it comes to grasping the love of God, we actually don’t have any frame of reference. Even the most loving of human parents pale in comparison to our loving Father in heaven.
As Paul writes to the Ephesian Christians, he prays that they, “…being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge…” How can we possibly know something that surpasses knowledge? Only by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and ongoing experience with our Father. God gives us glimpses every day that we can grasp. And over time, our experience of this incredible, unconditional, unchanging love grows.
For today, pray and ask your heavenly Father to help you more deeply understand his love for you. Think of the most loving person you’ve ever known and then realize that his love for you surpasses that by a long shot. “As high as the heavens are above the earth, that’s how great God’s love is for us!”
